Saloni’s Menziraat – Mehendi Was Just Too Magical
Menziraat, also known as Mehendi Raat is a tradition followed by Kashmiri pandits. In this ceremony, the bride’s aunt (Bua) applies a mehendi tikka on the bride’s hands and feet. This according to the Kashmiri traditions is known as Saat Menz – ‘Saat’ meaning the auspicious timing and ‘Menz’ means mehendi in Kashmiri. The mehendi ceremony thus begins and is followed by a night filled with Kashmiri folk music and dance.
Here are tips on how to flaunt your bridal mehendi pictures.
Kanishran and Devgon Are Pre-Wedding Rituals In Kashmiri Traditions
An important part of the Devgon ceremony is the Kanishran ritual. According to Kashmiri traditions, the bride-to-be is bathed in a mixture of rice, milk and curd by her matamaal (Maternal relatives).
After the Kanishran, the bride wears new clothes and conducts the Devgon puja which marks the transition into Grihastha life. During this ceremony, the bride’s bua also puts an ear ornament named ‘Dejhor’ for the bride. This is a pair of gold pendant adorned with precious stones connected to a gold chain or a red thread that is strung through the ear piercing. Later, the bride’s hair is middle parted and tied into two pony tails with the holy thread. The pony tails shall not be opened or untied until the Targa ceremony.
The Kashmiri Rituals Includes The Beautiful Targa Ceremony
Targa or Taranga is a beautiful headgear that Kashmiri brides wear on their wedding day. The two pony tails that were tied during the Devgon ceremony are opened during the Targa ceremony and tied into two plaits. Both the plaits are then adorned with golden gota patti and parandas. The bride then wears a ‘Taeich’ (a golden cap) on her head that is decorated with a ‘Sheeshlath’ (border) then a ‘Zoojh’ (dupatta) is placed at the top. All these headgears are tied together and secured with pins made with pure gold.
Also, Isaband (Harmala or sage) is burnt in a Kangadi (earthen pot) to keep evil spirits at bay and enhance positive energy around the bride.
