The saas and bahu relationship is always under a close watch. We often discuss it and the experienced ones never fail to share their tips and opinions. However, there is one relationship that demands equal nurturing but is somehow always sidelined. Yes, we are talking about the relationship of a groom with his mother-in-law. Dear grooms, we know that you don’t want your relationship with your MIL to be just about the formal meetings. She is the mother of your partner and you want to get along with her.
If you are ready to give this relationship your best then here are some tips to get along with your future mother-in-law that could help you:
1. Give her respect
The first and the most important aspect of any successful relationship is respect. This becomes imperative when it comes to your relationship with your mother-in-law. Grooms tend to spend more time getting the vote of confidence from the father of the bride and can end up neglecting the mother! If you want to be on good terms with your MIL then show her that you respect her just as much as you respect your FIL if not more. Let her know how grateful you are to her for raising such an amazing and confident daughter.
2. Show her how much you love her daughter
In all honesty, mothers only want their kids to be happy, successful and to be loved deeply by someone. Show your MIL how madly you are in love with her little girl and that you are a rock solid man who deserves her hand. If she can count on you, you are in for a treat. Assure her that her daughter’s happiness is what you want the most!
3. Don’t be pushy
Generation gap never comes without conflicting opinions. This is the bitter truth but this is how we all grow as individuals. You and your mother-in-law will have different opinions on various things but don’t let that difference in perspective turn into an ugly fight. Listen to her side patiently and if you still think that you want a thing to be done your way then choose to be firm, not rude. Your MIL will appreciate this mature attitude and might even agree to what you are saying.
4. Understand her state of emotions
Women have been notoriously tagged as emotional beings but we all love them for that. They feel emotions at a different wavelength than men and this stands true particularly for the mother of the bride. Your MIL is giving away her daughter to you. Her emotions will not be in her control anymore. Nobody would be able to console her but you. Be her shoulder at the time of your wedding and she will be your pillar for life.
5. Include her in planning your future
Whether it is buying a new house, car or even a washing machine, it is the mother of the groom who gets to be a part of the decision-making committee and the mother of the bride observes things from the stands. Change what has been happening since ages and truly include her while making future plans. It takes two to tango and don’t forget that you have your other half because of her.
6. Throw the formalities out of the window
Indian mother-in-law’s tend to be a bit formal with their sons-in-law. If you want an honest and homely relationship with your mother-in-law then you have to help her in getting rid of those tedious formalities. These things only kill a relationship and we are quite certain that this is not what you want. Have an open and welcoming relationship with her and that is possible only when you are comfortable with each other.
7. Ask her more questions about her daughter and the rest of the family
We are sure that you know your partner well but asking your mother-in-law about her will serve two purposes; first, she will feel important and included in your life and second, she actually knows a lot more about your girl than you do! While you are at it, you can also ask things about your family. Let her know how genuinely interested you are in knowing about your new family. This will make her feel that she is not giving away her daughter but getting a son.
Dear grooms, your mother-in-law is going to love you more than you can possibly imagine. She will pamper you like your own son but for that, you have to put in a little effort. Mothers are beautiful creatures with soft hearts. Your mother-in-law deserves a great son-in-law. So, follow these tips and be that for her.
